Empowering Kids in Camden Through Dance | Go Further | Ford

Ford owner Tawanda Jones is the founder of an inner-city youth program called

Camden Sophisticated Sisters. Camden Sophisticated Sisters (CSS) is a dance and drill team, yet it is so much more. Tawanda Jones provides a safe place for kids to gather to do homework, experience community, receive love, recognition and emotional support in this country’s most impoverished and violent city. The kids learn to dance – oh, they dance – to the beats of the drummers in the group. It is no exaggeration that CSS saves lives. In a place where gang activity and dropping out of high school is a way of life, the 4,000 kids who have passed through CSS have all graduated high school, and most have gone on to college.
