OVER THE RIVER OR THROUGH THE WOODS, FORD RANGER BREADCRUMBS TECH HELPS OFF-ROAD DRIVERS FIND THEIR WAY BACK

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 19, 2019 – Ford is making off-road adventures less stressful by giving drivers a “breadcrumb” path to find their way back to the pavement.

When enabled in the SYNC® 3 navigation settings, the Breadcrumbs feature works in the background to drop a virtual pin every second while out on the trail. When drivers need to return to the road, the feature provides them with a guide to get back to their starting point – without the stress of relocating landmarks.

ALL-NEW 2020 ESCAPE HYBRID TOPS SMALL SUV CLASS WITH EPA-ESTIMATED 44 MPG CITY, 41 MPG COMBINED FUEL ECONOMY RATINGS

  • 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid equipped with front-wheel drive beats out the segment with best-in-class EPA-estimated ratings of 44 mpg city and 41 mpg combined. EPA-estimated highway rating is 37 mpg; actual mileage will vary
  • Front-wheel-drive Escape Hybrid has an EPA-estimated range of 582 miles per tank – more than enough for a one-way trip from Sacramento to San Diego
  • New EV coach and eco mode features encourage more efficient driving to make the most out of the hybrid ownership experience Escape Hybrid has plenty of room for passengers and cargo by placing its liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery smartly below the second-row seats rather than occupying a significant portion of the cargo area

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 10, 2019 – Your drive over the river and through the woods to grandma’s house this holiday season might cost you less if you’re behind the wheel of the all-new 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid.

With a best-in-class combined EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 41 mpg, the redesigned front-wheel drive small SUV also tops its class while driving around town, with an EPA-estimated 44 mpg city. The 2020 Escape Hybrid Titanium with front-wheel drive has an EPA-estimated rating of 37 mpg on the highway.

With the average American driving 29 miles a day, making that trip in the all-new Escape Hybrid Titanium means barely using a gallon of fuel per trip – and fewer gas station stops along the journey. This makes the all-new Ford Escape Hybrid both easier on the wallet while helping to conserve fuel.

“This all-new Escape Hybrid is our best one yet, as it answers the call from our customers who loved the original Escape Hybrid but want better fuel efficiency without compromising interior space,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development and purchasing officer. “Plus, with driving range like no Escape before, we’re giving our customers a vehicle truly capable of letting them focus on living their lives while worrying less about stopping for gas.”

Each model in the all-new Escape lineup, whether hybrid-powered or equipped with EcoBoost® technology, has an EPA-estimated range of at least 400 miles per tank. Front-wheel-drive Escape Hybrid’s outstanding fuel efficiency is bolstered by an EPA-estimated 582-mile driving range per tank – more than enough for a one-way trip from Sacramento to San Diego.

Outfitted with available all-wheel drive, Escape Hybrid has an EPA-estimated 43 mpg city and 40 mpg combined with an EPA-estimated 568 miles of range. Like the front-wheel-drive Escape, the all-wheel-drive model has an EPA-estimated 37 mpg on the highway.

2020 Ford Escape Hybrid customers can see their potential fuel savings come to life with a new EV coach feature included in the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, which is standard on SE Sport and Titanium trim levels. EV coach lets drivers know when they’re using electric or hybrid power – allowing them to adjust their driving style to meet their power needs. In addition, eco mode, one of five standard selectable drive modes, helps conserve fuel when driving range is your priority.

There’s also plenty of room of passengers and cargo. The all-new Escape Hybrid packages its liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery smartly below the second-row seats rather than occupying a significant portion of the cargo area. The briefcase-shaped battery in the standard hybrid measures approximately one-third the size of the battery in the first Escape Hybrid, which was the world’s first-ever hybrid SUV when it debuted in 2004.

The all-new Ford Escape, built at Louisville Assembly Plant, is on sale now.

Mass Navigation: How Ford Is Exploring the Quantum World with Microsoft to Help Reduce Congestion

By Dr. Ken Washington, Chief Technology Officer, Ford Motor Company

Our connected world has helped billions of people improve their lives in numerous ways such as offering instant access to information, enhancing health care, providing new ways to watch movies or experience music, and equipping our homes with smart speakers.

Yet with all these advancements, many of us find ourselves stuck in more traffic, not less. The fantastic navigation technology that anyone can use and helps us more efficiently get places simply does not have the power to coordinate traffic on a mass scale.

But could it? Through a joint research pilot, Ford and Microsoft scientists have simulated thousands of vehicles and their impact on congestion by leveraging powerful quantum-inspired technology. While we’re still in the early stages of quantum computing development, encouraging progress has been made that can help us take what we’ve learned in the field and start to apply it to problems we want to solve today, while scaling to more complex problems tomorrow.

Julie Love, senior director at Microsoft leading their quantum computing business development, says, “Quantum computing has the potential to transform the auto industry and the way we move. To do that we need to have a deep understanding of the problems that companies like Ford want to solve, which is why collaborations like these are so important.”

Our researchers teamed up in 2018 to develop new quantum approaches running on classical computers already available to help reduce Seattle’s traffic congestion.

During rush hour driving, numerous drivers request the shortest possible routes at the same time, but current navigation services handle these requests in a vacuum. They do not take into consideration the number of similar incoming requests, including areas where other drivers are all planning to share the same route segments, when delivering results.

Just imagine a family trying to get ready for work and school in the morning with similar departure times. If an individual day planning app gave each person the quickest way to get going, there likely would be a bottle-neck at the bathroom. Now scale that to a family of thousands…

Instead of this type of individualized routing, what if we could develop a more balanced routing system — one that could consider all the various route requests from drivers and optimize route suggestions so that the number of vehicles sharing the same roads is minimized? That sounds great — and could potentially save everyone time, not to mention aggravation — but one major roadblock towards balanced routing is the fact that it would require extensive computational resources.

Simply put, it’s not feasible to have traditional computers find the optimal solution from a huge number of possible route assignments in a timely manner. That’s where quantum computing can help. Essentially, existing digital computers translate information into either a 1 or a 0, otherwise known as a bit. But in a quantum computer, information can be processed by a quantum bit (or a qubit) that can simultaneously exist in two different states before it gets measured. Upon measurement, however, either a 1 or a 0 appears randomly and the probability for each is governed by a set of rules called quantum mechanics.

This ultimately enables a quantum computer to process information with a faster speed. Attempts to simulate some specific features of a quantum computer on non-quantum hardware have led to quantum-inspired technology — powerful algorithms that mimic certain quantum behaviors and run on specialized conventional hardware. That enables organizations to start realizing some benefits before fully-scaled quantum hardware becomes available.

With the ability to process vast amounts of data that’s not possible today, it’s easier to imagine how quantum computing has the potential to deliver balanced routing to drivers, which could create a series of cascading benefits: smoother flow of traffic, more efficient commutes, and even reduced pollution.

Additional thoughts from Julie: “By taking what we’ve learned about quantum computing and bringing it to hardware that’s already available, we don’t have to wait until quantum computers are deployed on a wide scale to take advantage of the technology. Using world-class quantum algorithms customized for specific problems, we can bring measurable improvements and drive change that can impact people’s lives.”

Working with Microsoft, we tested several different possibilities, including a scenario involving as many as 5,000 vehicles — each with 10 different route choices available to them — simultaneously requesting routes across Metro Seattle. In 20 seconds, balanced routing suggestions were delivered to the vehicles that resulted in a 73 percent improvement in total congestion when compared to “selfish” routing. The average commuting time, meanwhile, was also reduced by 8 percent — an annual reduction of more than 55,000 hours saved in congestion across this simulated fleet.

These results are promising, so now we’re expanding our partnership with Microsoft to further improve the algorithm and understand its effectiveness in more real-world scenarios. For example, will this method still deliver similar results when some streets are known to be closed, if route options aren’t equal for all drivers, or if some drivers decide to not follow suggested routes? These and more are all variables we’ll need to test for to ensure balanced routing can truly deliver tangible improvements for cities.

Our collaboration with NASA last year also involved similar work around a routing efficiency problem for fleet vehicles, but our growing quantum computing team is working with Microsoft and others to investigate how this technology can be used in areas ranging from robotics to aerodynamics, as Ford continues to seek out ways to create better products and experiences for people.

This work with Microsoft is another example of how we are dedicated to finding innovative solutions for problems our cities face. Our recently unveiled City Insights Platform uses data and advanced software tools to enable cities to explore and help solve a variety of mobility issues. By leveraging parking, transit, traffic, safety and census data, City Insights Platform lets local planners test various concepts even before implementing them in the real world.

The scenario we explored with Microsoft is just one way that quantum-inspired solutions could be of interest to cities. Since we know how a quantum computer would attempt to solve a problem like this, we’ve reached a point where we can apply our knowledge to address near-term issues with hardware that we already have. That puts the future much closer to our grasp than many may have initially thought — and we are intent on seizing the opportunity.

BACKSEAT DRIVERS, HOLD YOUR TONGUES: DRIVER ASSIST TECHNOLOGY COULD END ‘ANNOYING’ BACKSEAT-DRIVER BEHAVIORS ON THE ROAD

  • Ford Co-Pilot360™ driver-assist technology can quiet nagging “backseat drivers” and help drivers navigate the roads with confidence
  • According to a recent Ford study, 68 percent of drivers believe that “backseat driving” behavior will decrease because their role is replaced by driver-assist technology
  • By reducing chirps from backseat drivers, driver-assist technology can help reduce relationship tensions in the car for a more harmonious ride

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 22, 2019 – “You can get over a lane.” “Watch that truck!” “You’re trailing to close. Slow down!”

Ah, the incessant chirps of the backseat driver.

Perhaps the days of a driver hearing those common calls from the backseat are coming to an end, thanks to driver-assist technology like Ford Co-Pilot360™. According to a recent study from Ford and sociologist Jess Carbino, 68 percent of drivers believe that backseat driving behavior will decrease because of driver-assist technology.

Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology can help quiet backseat drivers and take the lead in helping drivers navigate the road with confidence. Available driver-assist technologies – such as Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert and Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking can help reduce the risk of collisions and build confidence in certain driving situations, while always allowing the driver to remain in control.

For the study, Ford teamed with sociologist Dr.Jess Carbino, best known for her work with Bumble, and confirmed that backseat drivers can cause more harm than good for the well-being of those inside the vehicle.

“For a lot of drivers, constantly getting advice from passengers is more than just annoying, it’s stressful,” Carbino said. “The Ford Co-Pilot360 helps encourage trust during the drive and can help create a more relaxed, collaborative atmosphere in the car.”

In fact, the study’s findings contradict a growing belief that technology inhibits human connection. Insights from the study show that while backseat driving can cause in-vehicle relationships to suffer, driver-assist technology can help avoid unnecessary backseat banter. Since the technology can help assist with some of the burdensome tasks of navigating, drivers and passengers can focus on more enjoyable aspects of the ride, namely each other.

The data also suggests that since respondents have confidence in the technology, it can help eliminate the perceived need for their backseat driving input.

“Certainly the intent of Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology was not to eliminate backseat driving,” Chris Billman, Ford Co-Pilot360 engineering manager, said with a laugh. “But hey, if we can help in that way too, that’s great!”

FORD INTRODUCES SPORTY RANGER FX2 PACKAGE, ADDING OFF-ROAD STYLE, CAPABILITY TO TWO-WHEEL-DRIVE TRUCKS

  • As more customers prioritize truck customization and capability options, Ford is enabling Ranger buyers to take their two-wheel-drive truck to the next level with a new FX2 Package
  • Ranger FX2 Package sports tough styling and capability upgrades with an electronic-locking rear differential, off-road tires, off-road-tuned suspension, front underbody guard and Ford’s off-road cluster screen
  • Ranger fans can order the FX2 Package for their trucks now, with deliveries starting in late 2019

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 14, 2019 – Ford is introducing the new Ranger FX2 Package as another choice for customers who want off-road styling and capability in a two-wheel-drive offering.

“FX2 expands Ranger’s options for customers who want tough, off-road style with the functionality of a locking differential but don’t need four-wheel drive,” said Brian Bell, Ford Ranger marketing manager. “This is another way our customers can personalize Ranger to match their lifestyle while getting a great value.”

Aimed at more urban markets, the FX2 Package rides on 17- or available 18-inch off-road tires to add even tougher styling to two-wheel-drive Ranger. A front underbody guard and air dam-delete provide even more distinction, while shielding the underbody and improving approach angles.

Adding to Ranger’s two-wheel-drive capability, the FX2 Package includes an electronic-locking rear differential and off-road-tuned suspension for increased traction and performance off-road. Ford’s off-road cluster screen adds to the FX2 experience inside, where drivers can see pitch, roll and yaw in real time.

Tough looks, not tough choices

Demand for Ranger personalization options continues to increase, with two in every three buyers opting for a Sport Appearance Package, Chrome Appearance Package or STX Appearance Package, while one in every three selects the FX4 Off-Road Package. Over half of Ranger buyers are choosing the Trailer Tow Package.

“We’re seeing sales trends that tell us to grow Ranger’s capability and appearance options even further,” said Chad Callander, Ford Ranger consumer marketing manager. “The FX2 Package is a result of us listening to our customers and what they’re demanding from their trucks.”

Ranger offers a wide variety of packages and options, including the new Black Appearance Package with black accents and high-gloss black wheels, the Sport Appearance Package with Magnetic Gray-painted accents and unique wheels and the Chrome Appearance Package with chrome body accents and bright chrome wheels.

FX2 is the latest addition to Ranger’s capability offerings, which include the Trailer Tow Package with a 4-pin/7-pin wiring harness and Class IV trailer hitch receiver and the FX4 Off-Road Package featuring an electronic locking rear differential and Terrain Management System with Trail Control.

It all starts with Built Ford Tough

Ford Ranger answers the call of truck customers looking for an affordable, rugged and maneuverable midsize pickup that’s Built Ford Tough. Torture-tested alongside Ford F-150 trucks, Ranger quality starts with a high-strength steel frame backbone, proven Ford-built 2.3-liter EcoBoost® engine and class-exclusive 10-speed automatic transmission. Great features like a standard 4G LTE modem with Wi-Fi for up to 10 devices and an array of available dealer-installed accessories make Ranger a perfect partner for every adventure.

“What’s most important for our customers is that any personalization offering starts with Built Ford Tough DNA,” said Callander. “You know Ranger is going to live up to Ford’s proven truck standards, however you customize it.”

The FX2 Package is available for $595 (excludes taxes) and can be ordered at dealers now, with deliveries expected in late 2019.

UPGRADED MUSTANG SHELBY GT350R PICKS UP NEW CHASSIS TECHNOLOGY FROM GT500 FOR MORE FUN ON THE TRACK AND OFF

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 12, 2019 – As the greatest-ever Mustang performance lineup hits the streets, the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT350R picks up new performance tech and colors from its stablemates to make it more fun to drive on the track and off.

Enhancing handling and steering responsiveness, Shelby GT350R refinements for 2020 include redesigned front suspension geometry with a redesigned high-trail steering knuckle leveraged from the all-new Shelby GT500. To elevate driver confidence and steering precision, a new steering rack and recalibrated electric power steering control is also added.

“It’s always been our plan to take the latest innovations from the GT500 program and strategically apply them across the Mustang lineup,” said Ed Krenz, Ford Performance chief program engineer. “These latest updates to the GT350R keep its performance competitive and on the top if its game, whether that’s on the track or on the street.”

GT350R continues to also deliver against aggressive targets for weight reduction with a rear seat delete and carbon fiber wheels. Exhaust resonators also have been removed for weight savings with the benefit of creating a sharper exhaust tone.

For customers seeking more comfort in their Shelby GT350R, Ford offers an available Technology Package with a 12-speaker B&O premium sound system, Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert, Cobra Puddle Lamps and voice-activated navigation.

Also standard are carbon fiber wheels, larger front splitter and rear wing.

Standing apart from GT350, GT350R features distinct design details. Exterior touches include red painted brake calipers, red pin striping at the edges of the optional over-the-top racing stripes and Shelby GT350R badging. Inside is high-contrast red stitching, Shelby GT350R badging and the D-shaped steering wheel fitted with a red center mark at the top.

Shelby GT350
2020 Shelby GT350 carries over previous updates, including the latest advances in tire, aerodynamics and chassis technology. GT350 shares some new Mustang colors and new driver technologies. Grabber Lime and Twister Orange are two bright, new heritage feature colors that trace back to the 1970s, while new Iconic Silver and Red Hot Metallic provide some classic hues to the lineup.

FordPass Connect™, now standard on Mustang for 2020, allows owners to interact with their vehicles via a smartphone. Using FordPass Connect’s phone application, GT350 owners can locate their parked car, lock and unlock it, and check vehicle status, such as fuel, oil levels and maintenance alerts. The availability of these features varies by market.

STUNNING PERFORMANCE AND CONTROL: 2020 SHELBY GT500 ACHIEVES SUPERCAR ACCELERATION WITH 760 HORSEPOWER AND 7-SPEED DUAL-CLUTCH TRANSMISSION

  • Achieving 0-100-0 in 10.6 seconds, the Shelby GT500 sends drivers on a visceral driving experience typically reserved for exotic supercars thanks to its 760-horsepower engine, ultra-quick Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and the largest front brakes of any domestic sports coupe
  • Its first-in-class 7-speed dual-clutch transmission delivers more consistent power and torque compared to manual transmissions, while its computer-controlled mechanism can upshift as quick as 80 milliseconds – faster than a blink of an eye – making it the most capable Mustang powertrain ever
  • Shelby GT500’s five drive modes fully optimize the capabilities of the dual-clutch transmission and active chassis systems – from ultra-smooth road shifts in normal mode to forceful powershifts in drag mode – providing a personality for every type of performance driving

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 5, 2019 – As the most powerful street-legal Ford ever built, the all-new Mustang Shelby GT500 harnesses world-class muscle and powertrain technologies to attain supercar levels of performance. Its first-in-class 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, race-bred control strategies and advanced drive modes deliver a car that performs unlike any other domestic sports coupe.

Its 760-horsepower 5.2-liter V8 engine is the most power- and torque-dense supercharged V8 in the world. With 625 ft.-lb. of torque funneled through a Tremec® TR-9070 DCT 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the Shelby GT500 achieves a 0-100-0 in 10.6 seconds, thanks also to the largest front brakes of any domestic sports coupe (16.5-inch rotors) and available carbon fiber wheels, each wrapped in a Ford Performance-spec Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tire.

Beyond the raw power and ultra-fast shifts, advanced control systems optimize the capabilities of the chassis and powertrain to create distinct drive modes – or personalities – to get the maximum performance from every aspect of the Shelby GT500 performance hardware.

“The range of brute-force drag acceleration, seamless road shifts and amazingly smooth shifts on the track further highlights how the soul of the Shelby GT500 is elevated in our most advanced Mustang ever,” said Ed Krenz, Ford Performance chief program engineer. “Effortlessly handling the 760 horsepower is our segment-first Tremec dual-clutch transmission, with an advanced control system that enhances GT500’s five drive modes to deliver a driving experience once reserved only for exotic supercars.”

Dual-clutch transmission delivers
Applying 625 ft.-lb. of torque to the pavement effectively requires a transmission and driveline that can do more than just handle a massive amount of power. Ford Performance engineers collaborated with Tremec to design a gearbox that offers maximum driver control with stunningly fast shifting and greater performance across a wide spectrum of driving environments. The team’s “and” solution is the Tremec TR-9070 DCT 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

“In many ways, this is like having two transmissions in one,” said Pat Morgan, Ford Performance powertrain manager. “On one hand, it enables performance at the outer reaches of straight-line quickness with minimal torque interruption, yet provides an incredible amount of finesse and control in track environments for maximum stability and predictability at the limits of lateral acceleration.”

To firmly and smoothly deliver torque, the TR-9070 DCT dual-clutch transmission has a novel wet clutch system with five friction plates in the odd-gear pack for a total of 155 square inches of surface area. In the even-gear pack, six friction plates provide 136 square inches of surface area. Transmission fluid is applied to the clutch surfaces only during thermal events for optimal cooling and minimal parasitic loss. Seven non-sequential helical forward gears with advanced triple cone synchros are carefully matched to the engine’s torque curve and are pre-selected by an electrohydraulic shift mechanism using energy-efficient low-leak solenoids that can execute shifts as quick as 80 milliseconds in sport mode.

Inside the control system, timing is everything. Shift points and clutch modulation are orchestrated by a computer-controlled mechatronics system that simultaneously reads dozens of vehicle and environmental factors – including engine and transmission rpm, driver input and g forces, and clutch and shift fork positions – to pre-select and engage the optimum shift for every driving situation. Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are direct-wired to the transmission to avoid CAN-bus vehicle communication system delays and initiate shifts as fast as 130 milliseconds, further enhancing responsiveness and connected feel.

“Contrary to popular belief, fast shifts do not always equate to better road performance,” said Morgan. “In every driving situation, we emulated what professional drivers do, whether it’s a smooth, precise heel-and-toe shift of a professional track driver or a much more forceful powershift like drag racers. We’ve designed the perfect shift every time.”

Drive modes add more personality
The 2020 Shelby GT500 has five drive modes that further enhance the driver experience with a flick of the console mounted mode switch. It instantly changes the car’s personality from a moderated “normal” car to a “track” master with more aggressive throttle responsiveness and gear selections. The system changes nearly every aspect of the car’s behavior, including ride dampening, stability control, antilock brake modulation and steering feel – even the sound and instrument panel change. Inside the TR-9070 DCT dual-clutch transmission, drive modes influence transmission shift points and feel.

In normal mode, the system selects gears and shift timing for moderated, everyday driving and seamless shifting. In sport mode, shift character changes, slicing shift timing by roughly 20 percent while throttle tip-in is more responsive and rpm ranges extend longer into the maximum torque curve.

Selecting track or drag mode further changes the shift characteristics to pure performance. For maximum straight-line quickness, gear changes use “over-torque” shifts for uninterrupted power delivery, similar to powershifts that give an extra torque hit in between upshifts. Take the Shelby GT500 into a turn, however, and the transmission immediately adapts with smooth, quick and seamless shifts to ensure maximum lateral g cornering by minimizing driveline disturbances.

Drive modes aside, an rpm-selectable launch control and electronic line lock through Track Apps® enable synchronous powertrain strategies that deliver optimum quarter-mile runs, while an always-on pseudo launch control enables spirited launches at any time without having to select a drive mode.

“Every aspect of the Shelby GT500 driving experience changes with the mode – be that the throttle responsiveness and snap of the shifts you feel in the seat of your pants, or the ‘pop and burble’ of the exhaust in performance modes. It’s a full multisensory visceral experience,” said Morgan.

Power output is transmitted to the 3.73:1 Torsen limited-slip independent rear suspension via a carbon fiber driveshaft for reduced rotational mass and torsional distortion, plus larger halfshafts and a redesigned rear suspension hub for added strength.

Best-In-Class Power Takeoff Output Now Standard On 2020 Ford Super Duty Chassis Cab With Power Stroke Diesel

  • Ford is making commercial 2020 F-Series Super Duty more valuable to fleets by including Power Takeoff (PTO) provision on Class 3-5 chassis cab trucks optioned with a 6.7-liter Power Stroke® diesel
  • Best-in-class stationary 300 lb.-ft. of PTO torque comes from the third-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke® diesel working in combination with the all-new TorqShift® 10-speed heavy-duty automatic transmission
  • Ford’s pioneering Live-Drive PTO allows commercial customers to power industrial equipment and accessories such as snowplows, generators and hydraulic units with the truck in motion

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 1, 2019 – New on the 2020 Super Duty Chassis Cab, Ford is proud to offer Power Takeoff (PTO) as standard with its 6.7-liter Power Stroke® turbo diesel engine for auxiliary power needs on commercial vehicles. Combined, the 6.7-liter Power Stroke and all-new TorqShift® 10-speed heavy-duty automatic transmission with the power takeoff provision delivers best-in-class stationary torque of up to 300 lb.-ft. for commercial vehicle bodies that require direct-to-component or hydraulic body motor power. That’s 50 lb.-ft. more than the closest competitor.

“For a lot of our commercial and heavy-duty retail customers PTO power is the only way they can get a job done,” said Kevin Koester, Ford commercial vehicle marketing manager. “With more PTO torque on hand, every task is easier and even bigger projects are now within reach.”

Power takeoff allows customers to mount accessory equipment to the transmission for auxiliary power from the engine to increase functionality in applications that require direct or hydraulic power, such as generators, cranes, wreckers, pumper trucks, and boom lifts.

PTO provision will remain optional on 2020 Super Duty Pickup models and 7.3-liter gas V8 Chassis Cab models. Output with the TorqShift® heavy-duty 6-speed automatic double-overdrive transmission for F-650 and F-750 trucks and Super Duty stripped chassis trucks will be announced at a later date.

If a job has to get done and stationary power won’t cut it, the 10-speed Heavy Duty Automatic features Ford’s pioneering Live-Drive Power Takeoff which allows the customer to operate accessories when the engine is running whether the vehicle is in motion or stopped. This is critical for equipment requiring power on the move such as snowplows and dump trucks.
